UK heat pump grants in 2026

Quick answer: The main grant is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS), open in England and Wales. It pays £7,500 toward an air-to-water, ground source or water source heat pump, £2,500 toward an air-to-air heat pump (residential only), and £5,000 toward a biomass boiler. From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, an eligible property off the gas grid can get £9,000 instead toward an air-to-water or ground source heat pump. You do not apply yourself — an MCS certified installer applies on your behalf.

Where the scheme applies

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is open in England and Wales only.

  • Scotland — not covered by BUS. GOV.UK directs Scottish households to Home Energy Scotland for interest-free loans and grants.
  • Northern Ireland — the Boiler Replacement Scheme is closed. GOV.UK points to NI Direct for local energy saving grants.

We have not yet verified the Scottish and Northern Irish figures against their own administrators, so we do not quote numbers for them here. That work is queued.

How you actually get it

This is the part people get wrong: the scheme is installer-led. You do not fill in a form and receive money. An MCS certified installer applies for the voucher, redeems it, and the grant comes off your bill — so the price you are quoted should already reflect it. Ofgem processes the voucher applications and payments; DESNZ sets the policy.

Two limits worth knowing before you get quotes: you can get one grant per property, and hybrid systems do not qualify — a gas boiler combined with a heat pump is excluded. You also cannot use the grant to replace an existing low carbon heating system.
